![]() Large Goose Breeds Embden/Emden |
|
| The Emden (or Embden) is a heavy
breed that originates from Hanover in Germany, a prolific breeder that
lays well. Reasonably good egg producers (up to 40 eggs per season),
good sitters, early maturing and good foragers. Embden are white
geese with relatively tight feathering, an erect stand, orange shanks
and an orange beak. Goslings can be sexed
at day old with a reasonable degree of accuracy, as females have a
darker down than males but by few days, however, there is no difference
in feather colour and you then need to vent sex. If pure bred and well
handled can be placid but a breed that can turn on smaller yappy dogs
if stressed too far. They need water to splash although some may swim not all do. For housing use a large dog kennel or small garden shed to house the geese. During the winter they need to be protected against rain, wind, and snow . The shelter must be waterproof, predator proof and well ventilated ( goose crap is high in ammonia so small places produce quite a smell). For bedding use straw, paper shreds, wood chip, wood shavings or hay, although I do prefer hay for the nests. Recommend mucking out the geese enclosure every 1-3 weeks, depending on how many geese you have in the enclosure, and how big the enclosure is.
