* Light Goose Breeds:- Pomeranian ![]() |
| Pomeranian Geese . A meat breed used
for delicacies such as smoked goose breast in Pomerania in
the Northern part of Germany, bordering with Poland.
Standardised in 1982 for the UK. They are called L'Oie de
Poméranie in France and Pommerngans in Germany. Although only an
officially-recognized breed since 1912, historically developed by
Northern German farmers of Pomerania as early as 1500. They
can be found in Grey, Pied Buff, Pied Grey, and White in Europe . They
have vivid blue eyes and have been bred to have a single-lobed
paunch. They make good watch birds as they tend to greet visitors
noisily but this is often more to do with being greedy feeders than
aggressive tendencies For housing use a large dog kennel or small garden shed to house the geese. During the winter they need to be protected against rain, wind, and snow . The shelter must be waterproof, predator proof and well ventilated ( goose crap is high in ammonia so small places produce quite a smell). At night these geese must be penned up being vulnerable with their quiet and trusting nature to two and four legged predators. For bedding use straw, paper shreds,wood chip, wood shavings or hay, although I do prefer hay for the nests. Recommend mucking out the geese enclosure every 1-3 weeks, depending on how many geese you have in the enclosure, and how big the enclosure is. Queries ask via the domestic - waterfowl club website |
