* Medium Goose Breeds:- Sebastopol ![]() |
||
| Sebastopols are a breed of domestic
goose, also referred to as Danube geese; a name used for the breed in
Ireland in 1863. In German, they are called Lockengans or
Struppgans, meaning "curl-goose" and "unkempt goose" and occur in both
smooth and frizzled/frazzled format throughout Europe A medium to light goose often with long, white curly feathers. The feathers of the neck are smooth and occasionally greyish-brown as in the pic abov. Some breeders produced grey, buff, and saddle back variants. Feathers may be curly or smooth to the chest . The gander weighs 12-14 lbs while the goose weighs 10-12 lbs. Usually , females produce 25-35 eggs per year. Most Sebastopols cannot fly well due to the curliness of their feathers and have difficulty getting off the ground. As a breed they need more water in order to keep themselves clean with more frequent water changes and often 'decking' around their pond to lessen the mud For housing use a large dog kennel or small garden shed to house the geese. During the winter they need to be protected against rain, wind, and snow . The shelter must be waterproof, predator proof and well ventilated ( goose crap is high in ammonia so small places produce quite a smell). At night these geese must be penned up being vulnerable with their quiet and trusting nature to two and four legged predators. For bedding use straw, paper shreds,wood chip, wood shavings or hay, although I do prefer hay for the nests. Recommend mucking out the geese enclosure every 1-3 weeks, depending on how many geese you have in the enclosure, and how big the enclosure is. Queries ask via the domestic - waterfowl club website
