* Light Goose Breeds:- Steinbacher Mainly blue but buff, cream and a grey are known ![]() |
| Steinbacher Geese were standardised in the
UK in 1997 and are small, light weight, proud looking
geese similar to Russian Fighting Geese. Originally coming came
from the Thuringia region in eastern Germany and 'improved'
from a cross of local, regional geese and probably Chinese Geese.
Besides the stunning blue feathering their most distinctive feature is
an orange bill with a black bean. French call
them L'oie de combat de Steinbach or "The Steinbacher Fighting
Goose". In Germany, they are called Steinbacher Kampfgänse.
Kampfgänse also means "fighting Goose". .here they are
pretty useful friendly geese so names do not mean everything For housing use a large dog kennel or small garden shed to house the geese. During the winter they need to be protected against rain, wind, and snow . The shelter must be waterproof, predator proof and well ventilated ( goose crap is high in ammonia so small places produce quite a smell). At night these geese must be penned up being vulnerable with their quiet and trusting nature to two and four legged predators. For bedding use straw, paper shreds, wood chip, wood shavings or hay, although I do prefer hay for the nests. Recommend mucking out the geese enclosure every 1-3 weeks, depending on how many geese you have in the enclosure, and how big the enclosure is. Queries ask via the domestic - waterfowl club website |
